Gee Dee Nen picking grass with first lot this morning

Wednesday 23rd July

"Another good day, yesterday!" said Mark. "Bella Medici won at Yarmouth. Not only that but, as her breeder Pollards Stables pointed out, it was another first for me - I trained all three generations to win: the grand dam Medway, who I bought for Dena and Leslie at Goffs Sales in Ireland, the dam Missouri and now the filly Bella Medici.

"Bella Medici has been very difficult, in fact the worst I have ever had in all my years of training, at the stalls. I must give credit to all my staff who have done a tremendous job with her - persuading her that there were no lions and tigers in the stalls. She was very good yesterday and let's hope she has now got over her phobia as the way she won showed she may be able to win another little handicap.

Inchpast runs today

"Today we have Trawlerman at Lingfield (2.30pm). This has been moved on to the all-weather from the grass which is a bit disappointing, but he has galloped on the Al Bahathri several times so the surface holds no worries. I would just be apprehensive about the bends.

"Here and How runs at Leicester (7.20pm). She has been plagued with problems all her life but seems to be standing everything at the moment. This is not a very good race and I would hope that she would run okay and improve for the run.

"And, Inchpast runs at Sandown (8.45pm). He is a course and distance winner here. He ran nicely at Newmarket at the weekend and I think he may be in the shake-up tonight."

And we have some more pictures of the two-year-olds from yesterday and today:

Cornish Rose, Bertie Smalls with Orthology and Outland yesterday

Daredevil Dan and Astroleo (nearest); Omokoroa with Bishop Rock

Dulcie with Brushing (nearest), Theola with Blessing Belle (nearest) and Drum Dragon with Nice Time (nearest)

First lot coming up the watered gallop on Racecourse Side

"It's the most lovely morning at Newmarket," said Mark as he returned from second lot. "Sunshine, no wind and absolutely perfect ground on the watered gallop, just like a carpet. We worked thirty horses down there this morning and it would be the best ground in the country. We would never be racing on better ground than this any time during the year. The horses all looked pictures and are just starting to fire again so hopefully we can have a good run now!

"We were delighted with both the two-year-olds yesterday - Dazinski had improved for his first run at Newmarket and always travelled well. He responded to the jockey's urging in the last furlong to win going away. Call It On ran very green early on but he is a horse who will improve radically for this run. Azure Mist ran a nice race and looks like she is about ready to win now. Sonny Sam did not stay the two miles but Paul reported back that he felt in great form, so once we get him back in trip he will also shortly be winning.

Balladiene

Astrodiva and Premier Superstar

"Today we have Bella Medici at Yarmouth in the seller. She has had the one run at Pontefract last week where she was very slowly away, but showed she had a margin of ability and if she goes in the stalls again today I hope she can run a nice race, but she can be a nightmare in the stalls!"

Walking grounds on Lime Kilns

A new week and the Guv'nor changed his usual Monday morning routine on the gallops today.

"It is good for both the horses and riders to exercise in different places. Today we did plenty of walking and trotting up Side Hill, through the woods to Well Bottom and then across the Lime Kilns to Railway Land where they cantered up the Al Bahathri (pictured below).

"Plenty of exercise in the sunshine to refresh us all for the week ahead - and I am determined to have some winners again this week. We've had horses placed all over the country recently, but I want to be back in the Winner's Enclosure with my owners!

Azure Mist runs today

"Today we have runners at Yarmouth and tonight at Beverley.

"Call It On and Dazinski both run in the seven furlong maiden. Dazinski ran very green at Newmarket first time out, but got the idea at half-way and finished well. He will know a lot more this time and I would be hopeful of a reasonable showing. He may need another one just from the experience point of view. Call It On is a lovely big horse with a future. He has always shown me plenty of ability at home and today's experience will not be lost on him. Azure Mist runs later on in the mile and a quarter. She was a bit disappointing when she ran over the trip earlier in the year, but maybe the ground was against her that day. The course will suit and I would be disappointed if she is not in the shake-up today.

"Tonight we run Sonny Sam at Beverley. He will be suited by the trip and if they go a proper pace all the way it would be ideal. He stays well and is genuine."

From last week...

Due to holiday, only runner information was available.

newmarket

Saturday 19th: three runners after Soggy Dollar got cast in his box last night and has been withdrawn. Mikao however has made the trip to Haydock to run in 8.10pm race where the ground has turned heavy. We hope racing goes ahead. We have applied blinkers today to help him concentrate and he should run a nice race. At Newmarket we have Jacobite Prince running in the 4.10pm race. He missed the break slightly on his first run at Yarmouth, and this race looks better still, however hopefully he will get away well and run a nice race. Also at Newmarket, Inchpast runs in the 4.45 pm race. He has been disappointing since his wins on the all weather. The ground will suit him today, he has slipped down the handicap and we are doing our best with him.

Friday 18th: two of are three planned runners will take their chance as Indian Skipper has been withdrawn. Sweet Destiny runs in the Maiden Fillies Stakes at Nottingham (3.50pm) and she should have learned a lot from her recent outing at Pontefract. It looks a fairly competitive heat, however the course will suit and she can show a bit of improvement today. She does look the type however to do better when handicapped. At Newmarket, Missou Maiden runs in the Maiden Fillies stakes (6.15pm). She hated the ground at Yarmouth last time and never strode out on it at all. She will have learned a little and we expect a much better performance tonight.

Thursday: No runners

Wednesday: No runners

Tuesday: we have Astroangel running at Brighton in the 4pm. She likes if here and must be thereabouts at the finish. Astrolibra loves Brighton! She has not run a bad race all year so should also be on the premises. And finally Blue Admiral runs at Yarmouth in the 8.50pm. He will stay but he is taking on older horses so I just hope that he will improve again for the run.

Monday: we have two runners at Windsor. Benedict Spirit runs in the 7pm handicap. It looks a very competitive three-year-old handicap but we are at the bottom of the weights with a good draw at 10 so we will not be far away. Fortunes Maid runs in the 8pm. She is one of those that is always thereabouts and I think the trip and ground should suit so I am reasonably hopeful of a good run.
